Card Sorting

While developing this portfolio website, I decided to practice one of the lessons I learned about user-centered research in RHE 330C: User Experience (UX) Design. So, I dove into creating a card sorting set and sent it out to three users who generously set aside the time to separate the prompts into related groups/pages. The following photo progression displays the steps from card creation to preliminary sketches.

The first image shows the options given to card-sorting respondents. They were generated by looking at other portfolio websites gathered through online collections and Dr. Sackey’s page, the professor who teaches RHE 330C.

The following three images illustrate how three respondents sorted each card given the instructions, “please group the cards into how you would naturally organize a UX/writing portfolio and name each group.” This prompt was created with the hope of following their user journey and emulating it in the website’s natural flow.

Eventually, these card sorting results were used to create the first ideation of this website. By sketching the pages, as each respondent organized their prompts, I was able to create the first prototype of my portfolio, which has since been revised into the website you are exploring today.
